Another great report from alex racing today /this weekend
Wessex League Rd 9 – Southampton

Southampton is an ex National Circuit open sports pitched steep banks and single tracked wooded area
A bit of everything and one of the best circuits in the league.

Starting 24th on the grid today of a field of around 70 so was going to be a good battle with the usual suspects plus some new faces.

I had average start passing the pits in 17th after the technical wooded singletrack only to seem to be hit with the puncture fairy once again but this time pretty close to the second entrance of the pits to allow a quick bike change and no running!

After the bike exchange I was in the late 20’s in a pack of four Phill Godfrey , Doug Wollett, Richard Lewis with a few seconds gap between each on of us.

On one of the steep banks I went to make my move on all four of them only to realise that they where running it and I was able to ride it causing me having to get off and run with them when I didn’t really want to.

Another lap goes by and back heading towards the bank this time I made my pass on Phil Godfrey in front leaving me with a clear run up to the bank only to pass the other two at the same time at the top, We swapped places throughout the lap, again back at the bank I did the same move again this time dropping Phil Godfrey that was chasing which left me and Doug Wollett battling on the last lap for position In which succeeded to drop going into the woods on a small climb.

Coming out of the woods I could see I was catching the blazing saddles rider Tim warner pretty quickly I manage to catch him going on to the final straight on to be out sprinted to the line.

Overall a good day at the office a 25th finish and more points in the bag!

Roll on Dicot next week on what I’ve been told is a proper CX course involving a few hills and steps.

Thanks to Dad & Lindy in the pits.

Tim from Hills Cycles & Fishing Tackle for keeping the bikes up together !

Great result Alex keep up the great work and see you next week at the next race

Wessex League Rd 8 – Oxford Brooke Uni.

Round 8 Oxford Brookes is an open circuit around sports pitches with a short technical section through some woods which suited the road riders amongst the Wessex league also with the central league not having a race this weekend meant we had a large field of 80.

Starting 22nd on the third row today in the freezing cold after climbing a load of positions since my disaster ride at Abingdon I feel I’m about where I should be again after a few weeks of playing catch up.

I managed to get a decent enough start to stay out of trouble of the massive field of 80 riders I found myself in 22nd over the first two laps with the usual suspects in tow.

I kept with a group of riders Tom nightingale and co but every lap on the same place I was being dropped by the group

I found myself struggling on the exit of the woods every lap which was a log which most people where hopping over and carrying momentum where as me after last years accident hopping boards was running it and loosing places every lap it took me until 3 laps from the end until I managed to get the balls to give it ago even tho every lap in practice I was hopping it I just got it in my head that I was going to crash.

I found myself in 29th position catching the original group of riders now I was hopping the log In which it then starts to rain to added to the already freezing temperatures making things also very slippy on the already polished ground.

I managed to catch back up with Tom, pass him and proceeded to chase the rest of them buy that I had time ran out of time and I finished 28th out of 80 riders on the day which I’m happy with I seem to be getting pretty consistent with the late 20 finishes.

Next week is southampton sports centre a circuit used as a national round a few years ago which has a bit of everything checked in and usually a tad muddy!

Thanks to Dad & Lindy for standing around in the cold for most of the day !

Tim Hills From hills cycles and fishing tackle for the continued support.

Wessex League Rd 7 – Winchester Sparsholt College

Round 7 at Sparsholt college was an open circuit field circuit with a few features to make it interesting and one of the longest lap within the league of around 10 minutes being the average.

Gridded 24th in the league at the moment meant I was to start on the fourth row smack bang in the middle so plenty to look out for off the start.

I had a cracking start and found myself in 15th after a few corners, we made our way through the endless chicane through tress to the first of the banks where the rider In front of me dropped a chain on the run up to the bank to only stop on the bank and for everybody to pile into him and me.

Once I managed to get going again I found myself in a small group of riders Caleb Smy, David Brazier being the company.

We went on for a lap or so before I found myself alone with Caleb Smy being around 10 seconds in front of what felt like a massive gap.

Caleb Smy lost his front wheel on the tight left handed off camber section with two laps to go so I took the opportunity to make a gap and to hold him off until the end.

On the last lap I found myself being chased down by Matt Dixon from Sontonia CC and Thom Hayward, Matt Dixon passed me and I managed to catch him back up again only for me to think the finish line was earlier in the lap than I thought and I’d already blown myself out catching him back up by then to be able to do anything.

I managed to hold of Thom Hayward & Caleb Smy and finish a respectable 25th out of a field of 63 and not feeling my best.

On to next week at Oxford Brooke’s University I had my best result there last year so looking forward to it and also hoping for some mud!

Thanks to dad for being in the pits !
